Gabriela’s Teaching Job
Dear Dyan:
I hope you can see this message and I hope you can help me through this. I have been without a proper job for almost two years, last year I entered a high school and was fired one month later. Since then I have been teaching private tuition with no social benefits, nor paid holidays nor insurance. Previous to this I taught languages at a University where I worked for 13 years.
Yesterday I was offered a job in a different city, two hours away from where I actually live. I have a little house in that town so moving wouldn´t be so hard. What worries me is that I would be teaching high school students once again, and I really had such a bad experience last year. So I´m really wondering if this would bring another failure to me. I need the benefits this school is offering so I can have a proper retirement. I´m 57 years old and I´m not easily offered jobs at this point in my life. But I´m so very much afraid of being disliked by the students. I´m not a nasty person. Quite on the contrary. I think they abuse my being easy going if I can say so. Please if you could answer to me you would really help me so much.

Life brings us certain experiences and opportunities to grow. That’s what this is. It’s about overcoming fear and learning about love. Self-love is included here. There is a huge opportunity for you to make a difference in someone’s life if you take this job. I hope you take it, but it’s a choice as is everything. Now, please try to understand that there are no failures. There are only lessons and these are all lessons in love. There is nothing to fear. No one can abuse you unless you allow it. Learn to make a boundary. It’s perfectly fine to make a boundary. Examine why you feel it is not ok to make a boundary. Remember, this isn’t a popularity contest. It’s about teaching and learning. In life, not everyone will like you. It’s just the truth. You do your best and that’s all you can do. Again, in any “bad” experience, try to see the bigger picture. That picture is always, always about love. Always. I hope you take the job, Gabriela.
